about

Limited edition cassette released fall 2020 through Metaphysical Powers: metaphysicalpowers.bandcamp.com

"A gem of blissed-out, dubby, lo-fi pop." - Luke Turner (The Quietus), Quietus Reissues etc of the Year 2020

"An evanescent quality seeps through the songs, instruments dropping in and out, soft interferences building and dissipating, reggae basslines cropping up in odd places. The kind of organic song deconstruction you get on a radio sitting between two stations. This flickering quality has bled into the lyrics themselves. The line, 'In between, a memory and a dream' on 'One And The Same' is perhaps the best possible explanation of the mystery these muffled pop songs have. Hypnagogic and haunted aesthetics are hardly new, but few have captured the sense of sitting between two planes quite so compellingly as Moonshine manages here." - Daryl Worthington (The Quietus), Spools Out: The Best Tapes of 2020

---

Over time, some things nearly disappear, leaving only faint traces.
Over time, some things reemerge, as if they were never gone.

Such is the case of Vinny Moonshine's Live at Waxwing. Heck, such is the case of Vinny himself. A plunderphonic trickster with a keen ear for the mixer, Vinny released Waxwing into the void in 2014, just before a sustained period of illness blasted his short term musical plans to bits, all but obliterating whatever momentum he had amassed at the time.

Still, Waxwing was there, adrift in cyberspace, waiting to be stumbled upon. It's a strange thing, this record. First of all, it isn't live. But it is, in its own twisted way a document of a live set. You see, Vinny played some covers once, at an annual party called Waxwing. The backing tracks were mutoid versions, soaked in a dub sensibility, completely divorced from the originals. So, our troubadour for troubled times wrote new lyrics and vocal melodies, leaving only one cheeky trace, one massive clue (smack dab in the middle of the record) as to where and how these songs originated. Long story short, what we have here is easily the best thing Detroit's weirdo underground produced that year. A real contender for the best thing Detroit's weirdo underground produced that decade. An almost lost classic.

Kristen and I are thrilled to be issuing this raw nerve of reverb in a physical format for the first time. True heads will recognize and know the Truth.
